As you may have noticed, we missed the March issue of the Newsletter,
simply due to the fact that we ran out of time and resources to
compile it. We need You! Some fresh and active people to get more
involved. Again, ICRA is fast approaching,
and we need Your support to organize all the great activities we have lined up. So please, if you
are coming to ICRA, and have at least a little time to put in for the
benefit of the community, please let us know at ras_sac@ieee.org.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Keep roboting,
Tamas

Student Photo Contest
All RAS students are invited to participate in the Student Photo Contest. The ICRA 2011 Student
Photo Contest is a seasonal amateur photography competition, which is open to ICRA 2011 undergraduate
and graduate student attendees. The judging of the submitted photographs will be made by the IEEE
RAS SAC, involving independent judges. Three winners will be announced. You can upload your pictures
here!
ICRA Student Reporters
The chance is given to you to become famous with your writing skills: we are calling for entertaining,
yet professionally relevant reports on the different Sessions of ICRA. Please look here

Research publications are without a doubt, the driving force behind the scientific progress
of our area of research. Redacting material worthy of publication and conducting the research that provides
these results is a challenging, but widely known and understood process. However, perhaps more is to be
learned when analyzing what makes certain papers worthy of awards and acclaim, and more importantly, relevant
enough to be actively cited. In this article, we interview researchers who recently received awards for
their papers.
Featured in this article:
- Best Medical Robotics Paper, ICRA 2010: Superhuman Performance of Surgical Tasks by Robots Using
Iterative Learning from Human-Guided Demonstrations, Jur van den Berg et. al.
- Best Conference Paper, RSS 2010: Biophysically inspired development of a sand-swimming robot,
Daniel I. Goldman et. al.
- Best Student Paper, RSS 2010: Passive torque regulation in an underactuated flapping wing
robotic insect, Pratheev Sreetharan et. al.
- Best Student Paper, ICRA 2010: Non-Ideal Swimming of Artificial Bacterial Flagella Near
a Surface, Kathrin Eva Peyer et. al.
- Best Conference Paper, ICRA 2010: Integrated Silicon-PDMS Process for Microrobot Mechanisms,
Aaron P. Gerratt, Ivan Penskiy, Sarah Bergbreite.
The interview questions were:
- How did the research group work together? What were the main contributions
of each author?
- What do you think made the paper strong and ultimately worthy of the award?
- Has the group continued to work on this project? What can we expect from future
publications coming out of your lab?
- What do you consider to be the major lesson learned while working on this project?
- Did the group encounter any difficulties with team work? If so, how were these solved?
- What was the writing process like? Does the group have any particular modus
operandi that is used while redacting material to be published?

One of the goals during this 2011 is to get the Newsletter committee read more and
more. This requires that the information provided to students is more useful and fits their needs.
This improvement process will involve further efforts generating, collecting and
editing of the content of NL. To achieve this we need to add more volunteers to the team!!
If you feel like joining the team, do not hesitate and please write us!
Your contribution will go around the world!
Greetings!

The SAC committee is highly interested in the proliferation of activities related
to robotics, mainly organized by students. We are particularly interested in publishing the activities
organized by your local RAS chapters and to facilitate the exchange of experiences for the generation
of new and better events.
In this way, we open this space as a channel of communication between student
members of the society. If you are interested in publishing your RAS event, please
write us
and we will send you the instructions to do it.
We look forward to hear from you!!
