Dear
friends,
It's our pleasure to greet you once again!
Here we come with a complete issue of our
monthly newsletter. You will find lots of
information which includes ICRA
and IROS conferences, RAS SAC call
for volunteers, and our periodic
newsletter sections such as toolbots,
interesting news, and upcoming
events. Please use
the navigation bar on the left to
find sections you are most interested in.
It
is worth mentioning that we are grateful
to all those who participated in the
survey we sent out last month. It will
help us improve the newsletter to include
new and useful content for all of you!
If you have not completed it yet, please
take it! It's really short...
As
you know, IROS 2011 is quickly approaching
and we want to bring that to your
attention! Below you can find organizers'
call for participation. When such a great
number of IEEE RAS students come together,
the SAC naturally has to organize some
events! Take a look at the IROS student
programs section to find out what's in
store.
Finally, don't forget that you are always
invited to be a part of all activities
promoted by the SAC. Please visit our site
to stay up to date with SAC projects and
to get involved!
Keep in touch!

IROS
2011 Call for participation
IROS 2011 will be held in San Francisco,
California on Sept. 25-30. The conference
has received a record of submissions, and
its novel format will feature interactive
presentations, robot demonstrations,
thematic plenary sessions on design,
bio-robotics, and intelligent
transportation, and special-topic symposia
celebrating 50 years of robotics. In
addition, the program includes workshop,
tutorials, industrial forums, technical
tours, and a large exhibition showing some
of the latest developments in the field.
The venue and social program are designed
to provide an atmosphere for fruitful
discussions and meaningful interactions
among the participants. Further
information about IROS 11 may be found on
the conference website: http://www.iros2011.org

SAC
activities at IROS 2011
Please take a look at the tentative
schedule of activities planned by SAC. You
can find official IROS activities and RAS
SAC planned activities all together. Some
of these activities require us to make
reservations and we do not want to leave
any participants behind. Thus, please let
us know if you want to join in advance!
Don't forget that RAS members will be
prioritized on activities with limited
vacancies (Indicate your membership in the
application email). Not a member yet? Sign
up now at www.ieee-ras.org!
Please
note that this schedule is subject to
change, so check back closer to the day
of the event: http://wiki.ieee-ras.org/mab/sac/iros2011
Finally, don't forget about the ongoing
programs from RAS! The details are below.
-
FIBRS
(Fostering Interaction Between
Robotists and Students)
Student/Chair Mentorship Program
At this year's
IROS, students can get involved in a
fun way! Get the "behind the scenes"
experience of a conference! This
program will give you a chance to
interact with key researchers in your
field. Students will be paired with a
Session Chair, where they will learn
how to run a conference session.
Students who are interested, should
start by reading the session guide to
decide on a session chair that they
would like to be paired with. Please
email the name of the session, the
date, and your relevant contact
information to fibrs@ieee.org.
Keep in mind that people are
occasionally very busy, so you may
wish to provide an alternative mentor
name.
-
Student Photo
Contest
You are
invited to submit your photographs
taken during IROS 2011. This is a
seasonal amateur photography
competition, which is open to IROS
undergraduate and graduate student
attendees. Evaluation of submitted
photographs will be made by the IEEE
RAS SAC with involvement of
independent judges. Three winners will
be announced and awarded after the
conference. You can upload your
pictures at the following website: http://photocontest.ieee-ras.org/iros2011/upload.php.
All submitted photos will be retained
for archival purposes.
-
Student Reporters
program
This is your
chance to become famous with your
writing skills: we are calling for
entertaining, yet professionally
written reports on different sessions
at IROS. The best reports will receive
awards and will be published in the
Robotics and Automation Magazine's
upcoming issue. You can register
yourself for a session via this link.

from a slate of candidates, approved by
the Membership Activities Board.
Candidates may be undergraduate or
graduate students, but must be student
members of the IEEE Robotics and
Automation Society in good standing.
The ideal candidate will have strong
social and professional skills, will be
willing to take part in the ongoing
activities of the society, and will have
proposals for new initiatives. There is no
geographical preference!

Interesting
Robotics News
By Brian

Are
Companies Ready for an All Robot Work
Force?
Foxconn, an electronics manufacturing
heavyweight, plans on purchasing one
million robotic workers over the next
three years. Their current workforce
consists of 1.2 million human workers and
10 thousand robots. If this deal goes
through, Foxconn may be able to replace
their entire workforce. Obviously, they
will need a staff of robot maintenance
technicians, but nearly a million people
may find themselves unemployed as a
result. An alternate possibility is that
Foxconn will retain their human workforce
and expand their market share from 40
percent of electronics to ALL electronics.

Enthusiasm
for Online Course is Overwhelming
Recently, Stanford
Professors Sebastian Thrun and Peter
Norvig offered a few computer science
courses online for free to the public.
Much to their surprise, the Intro to
Artificial Intelligence course received
over 100,000 requests for enrolment. The
course website allowed you to sign-up to
receive information about how the course
will work. I signed-up when there were
only 10,000 requests and have yet to hear
anything from them. It appears that they
may not have been prepared to handle such
volume. You can follow the course twitter
feed at: http://twitter.com/#!/aiclass
Stanford's Introduction
to Databases and Introduction
to Machine Learning are also
available online this fall!

e-Learning
RAS SAC project
A
new e-learning project is being developed
by active SAC members. The goal is to
create a platform for sharing knowledge
and resources between all RAS members.
Specifically, our goal is to generate regular
webinars conducted by RAS
professionals, teachers, and advanced
students in areas related to robotics and
automation.
At this stage of
the project, we are organizing our ideas
on the wiki: http://wiki.ieee-ras.org/MAB/SAC/lc.
We also need your valuable input! Please
do not hesitate to leave your comments on
the wiki (you need to login) or to write
to our project leader Angelos
Wafik directly.
Finally,
we are seeking volunteers to present these
webinar series. If you belive you know
someone with expertise in a specific area,
please let us know!
