RAS Student Activities Committee Newsletter

Volume 1, Issue 7, 7th September 2010

Fellow Students,

Good morning to all you fellow-robotocists!

We are back after a nice and busy summer break. As you undoubtedly know, IROS 2010 will happen next month! At October 18th a swarm of international researchers will invade Taipei to share and discuss their most recent scientific breakthroughs and other research results. The schedule looks great with a nice mix of all the various aspects of robotics.

We are looking forward to meeting you in Taipei next month!

On behalf of the IEEE RAS SAC

Best wishes,
Michel Franken.

Scheduled RAS SAC activities for IROS

When such a great number of IEEE RAS students are together, the SAC naturally has to organize some events! Like at ICRA we have composed a mixture of events for you to join. You can simply register for the events by sending an email with your preferences to me.

Below the various activities are listed. The meeting place for each activity will likely be in front of the conference venue. Tentative meeting times are listed, but should these change you will be notified by email.

Day Morning Lunch Afternoon Evening
Monday, Oct 18 Informal lunch (12:20h)
Tuesday, Oct 19 Student Co-Chair Informal lunch (13:00h)
Group Photo (13:45h)
Student Co-Chair Visit Taipei 101 (20:15h)
Wednesday, Oct 20 Student Co-Chair GOLD Lunch (13:00h) Student Co-Chair Shilin Night Market (22:30h)
Thursday, Oct 21 Student Co-Chair Lunch with Leaders (13:00h) Student Co-Chair Exploring Nightlife (22:30h)
Friday, Oct 22 Karaoke Night (21:00h)
Saturday Oct 23 National Palace Museum (9:00h) Hike in Yangmingshan Park (13:00h)

  • Student co-chair

In order to promote the interaction between students and established researchers the SAC will try to arrange with the IROS organization to have students act as co-chairs during the conference sessions. This is a great way to meet the Session Chairs and gaining experience in how conferences actually work behind the scenes.

  • Lunch with Leaders

The idea is to focus on a specific field of research each day. For this lunch break a group of well known researchers and possibly/hopefully industrial representatives will be invited for you to meet and share in some discussions about the future directions of the field, or even your own research. Lunch will be provided, but the number of attendees each day will be limited to 45. Please let us know if you have a specific topic/research field which you would like to see put on the schedule!

  • Informal lunch

To get to know each other early during the conference we would like to go out and have lunch together. We will try to obtain a good reference for some traditional Taiwanese food from a local organizer!

  • Visit to Taipei 101

A visit to Taipei is not complete without having seen the city at night from one of the highest buildings in the world. Please let us know in advance if you are planning to attend this event so that we can arrange for a group admission!

  • Visit to Shilin Night Market

Taipei is home to various markets that are open during the entire night. Especially Shilin Night Market is supposed to be a lively scene during night time.

  • Exploring nightlife of Taipei

After the closing session the conference will officially have closed. Of course this needs to be celebrated. This evening we want to go and explore the nightlife of Taipei!

  • Karaoke night

One of the favourite passtimes of Taiwan (according to my information) is Karaoke. To fully integrate into Taiwanese society we will go and seek for the nightingale robotocist amongst ourselves!

  • National Palace museum and hiking trip through Yangmingshan Park

The National Palace Museum is home to some of Taiwans most impressive art and historic items. Even the museum itself is supposed to be a spectacle to see. The plan is to spend approx. 2 hours in the museum. Afterwards we want to go an a hiking trip through the beautiful Yangmingshan Park. There is a nice trail that start directly next to the National Palace Museum. Make sure you have sturdy footwear, clothes, water and some snacks with you! If you only want to join for the hiking trip please be at the National Palace Museum at 13:00h.

  • GOLD Lunch

Lunch with GOLD affinity group members!

Let's move! Become RAS volunteer

Header

The great thing about professional organizations is that the more you invest, the higher the return is. Earlier this year we started to organize project teams to realize our plans. Some volunteered already to invest more to run these programs (ICRA 2010 SAC activities, Find your mentor, Code Head, Photo Contests, Student Reporters, RAS-SAC Newsletter, coming IROS 2010 SAC activities, and more!), but we still need a lot of arms and brains to build a bigger, better student community.

Just to let you know about two ways to get involved with our work towards a more useful RAS student community:

  • 1) We are posting information about all our projects and work-in-progress on the RAS wiki. Go to http://wiki.ieee-ras.org and check the "Member Activities" section. Feel free to leave your comments - that's the spirit of the wiki!

  • 2) We encourage everyone to keep their profile on http://ieee-ras.org up to date. If you are author or co-author of papers or attending conferences this year, this is a great way to find your contact details for other RAS members. The profile information is not public.

We need you to make IEEE RAS stronger, more active and more practical. We hope you will find your fitting place in the community! Contact us!!

  • Webinar: "The Top Three Prototyping Challenges in Robotics"

    Thursday, Sep 30, 2010 - 2:00 PM ET / 11:00 AM PT / 18:00 GMT (Duration: 1 hour)
Robotics is one of the fastest-growing and most complex engineering fields. Almost every type of robot operates in a different environment and has a different behavior or mission. Three of the biggest challenges that developers face when prototyping robots are integrating with sensors and actuators, implementing autonomy, and deploying deterministic control algorithms to embedded hardware. Learn how the latest design tools from National Instruments can help you meet these challenges and shorten your development time.

  • GOLD Webinars

IEEE GOLD hosts monthly webinars on topics ranging from professional development to technical knowledge to humanitarian initiatives. These webinar sessions are presented by experts in their fields, recorded for on-demand viewing, and offered to the IEEE GOLD community as a member benefit.

  • IEEE Jobsite Webinars

Upcoming and archived career-related webinars created to help IEEE Members jumpstart their careers or enhance their existing ones. These webinars are hosted by the IEEE Job Site, IEEE Spectrum and IEEE USA.
