FAQ

How many people are on this committee?

There are three students on the committee - chair and two new co-chairs which we are recruiting for.

What do you do?

The student activity committee cochairs assist the chair of the Student Activity committee, who is also a voting member of the RAS Administrative Committee (AdCom), the governing body of the society to 1. Determine and make the AdCom aware of concerns of students

2. Work with the chairs of RAS Student Branch Chapters to encourage their active participation in activities which will benefit their members' technical, professional and educational goals

3. Plan activities at RAS major conferences to enable students from different countries become acquainted and active in RAS

The student activity committee was responsible for creating the RAS wiki, the jobs board, and organizing a student party at ICRA 2008.

Is it totally student run, or are there professors/IEEE "professionals" who are also involved in the brainstorming?

This group is a subset of the member activities board currently headed by alicia casals. We get to interact with the rest of the RAS administrative committee. Most of the initiates are put forth by the student but members of the committee email us with thoughts from time to time. We also work with the local conference committee, which changes where-ever the conference is held, to plan events. The work does spike around the conferences since that is when we are putting in new proposals and executing ones with funding. I send out a fair amount of emails informing the chairs of activities and writing proposals. It's not too large of a time commitment ( a couple hours a month), but I am very active in trying to get this committee off the ground.

Also, you make it sound like a pretty low level time commitment. Sounds like a spike around ICRA and a spike around IROS. Is that accurate?

We are looking to be proactive and make the student activities committee more active. It requires a few hours of work a month with a heavier load before and during the conferences since that is when we propose new initiatives and execute several activities. It is what you make of it. I am very active since it's an honor to be in this position and I want to best serve the student's needs.

Before you did this, were you already involved in IEEE and RAS?

I was a member of RAS but I had not done anything on the administrative side prior to this.

How do I get a RAS faculty to nominate me? Do I really need one?

A student who submits a strong letter and a nomination from a professor at his university will be much more likely to be appointed. If you sign into your RAS web account you can search the RAS directory by city and possibly locate a professor you know well enough to request a nomination.

History of Student Activities Board

This committee was formed in 2006 as an initiative by the RAS Adcom to represent a student voice. As part of the Member Activities board, the student activities board consists of a chair who serves a two year position and 2 cochairs who serve one year positions. Goals of the SAC is to represent students in robotics worldwide.

The chair serves on both MAB and is a voting member of AdCom. These meetings occur twice a year and are held at IROS and ICRA ec.
